January 2009 Mix CD

So, after reading through some year-end “best of 2008” type lists, I’ve come up with a new mix disc for the new year.  It’s a bit Pitchforky and probably one of the more poppy compilations I’ve put together, but its supposed to be driving music anyway.  The tracklist is as follows:

  1. The Rapture – Whoo! Alright — Yeah… Uh Huh
  2. VHS or Beta – You Got Me
  3. Bloc Party – Mercury (corny vocal hook, but just a devastating tune)
  4. Mindless Self Indulgence – 2 Hookers & An 8-Ball
  5. Tool – Stinkfist
  6. Interpol – The Heinrich Maneuver (damnit, Interpol, why won’t you do anything as musically clever as you did on Turn On the Bright Lights? I know you still can)
  7. Ida Maria – Oh My God (album version – I like it better without the male vocals)
  8. Beck – Youthless
  9. Vampire Weekend – A-Punk (very few bands have a more deceiving band name/genre combination)
  10. Morningwood – Nth Degree
  11. Zwan – Yeah! (aka the only decent Zwan song)
  12. Santogold – Lights Out (possibly the most catchy pop melodies of 2008)
  13. MGMT – Time to Pretend
  14. TV on the Radio – Dancing Choose
  15. Mindless Self Indulgence – Tom Sawyer
  16. Ladytron – Evil (edited by me to remove outro)
  17. Poni Hoax – Budapest (a terrifying combination of funk and drama)
  18. Final Fantasy – The Butcher (extremely original production, but terrible artist alias)
  19. The National – Brainy (one of the few songs off of Boxer I hadn’t yet included on a mix CD)
  20. Blur – The Universal
  21. Nick Drake – Pink Moon
  22. Fleet Foxes – Blue Ridge Mountains (so much better than “White Winter Hymnal”)

Arbitrary song of the day: Brian Eno & David Byrne – The Jezebel Spirit
